A sixth movie in The Exorcist franchise is coming this fall, but it's not like any of the other sequels. The Exorcist: Believer is designed as a direct sequel to the 1973 original, taking none of the other sequels into account. Fifty years after Regan MacNeil was possessed, two little girls begin exhibiting the same behavior. One the fathers reaches out to Chris MacNeil, Regan's mother, for support. MacNeil is played once again by original actress Ellen Burstyn, the first time she's revisited the franchise since 1973. Since her daughter was exorcised, MacNeil has been studying demonic possession and has become an expert. Maybe she is the exorcist in this movie. Burstyn is 90 years old, but appears a good twenty years younger.
The Exorcist: Believer also stars Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd, and Jennifer Nettles. It is a quasi-reboot of the franchise, and is planned as the first of a trilogy. The second will be The Exorcist: Deceiver, scheduled for release in April of 2025. The third film is not yet named. The Exorcist: Believer will hit theaters on October 13.
