December 6 is the annual feast day for St. Nicholas. The night before, on December 5th, many countries in Europe celebrate Krampus Night, in honor of the "anti-Santa Claus." Krampus is the demon who provides the stick to Santa's carrot, and punishes little children who've been bad this year. The Alpine folklore character provides a dose of terror during the cheerful holiday season. Krampus night is traditionally celebrated with parades in which people dress up as Krampus to scare the crowds who come out to watch. America has some Krampus events coming up, not limited to December 5th.
