The Munsters was a 1964-'66 sitcom in which the gimmick was the typical suburban family who were actually Universal movie monsters. Herman and Lily Munster, along with their son Eddie and Grandpa looked the part and had weird tastes, but underneath they were a typical loving family. They lived in an eerie mansion on Mockingbird Lane that all fans coveted. But Sandra and Charles McKee turned that dream into reality.
The McKees built a house in Waxahachie, Texas, that is an exact replica of the Munster home. They watched all 70 episodes of The Munsters over and over, gleaning the details of the set in order to recreate the exterior and interior. They purchased some of the props actually used on the show and had others custom-made. The details are impressive, from the electric chair to the dragon Spot living under the stairs to the coffin phone booth.
The McKees lived in the mansion for twenty years, only moving next door a few years ago. Now they offer tours of the Munster Mansion and stage monthly catered murder mystery nights. You can see pictures of those at Facebook.
